A couple of Cheeky Lads!

Round 7 saw an outstanding family "Double Cheek" performance from the Cheek Brothers.

We all know Darren “Cheeky” Cheek (59) who for the first time got to play with younger brother Alan (53) in the Brighton O50’s team against the Hills Fleurieu green team at Blair Athol.

The brothers Cheek had a day out to remember with both helping to demolish the Hills Fleurieu batting for just 133. Alan was given first crack with the ball bowling his prodigious in swingers and was then joined by Darren from the other end bowling his mediums.

“I’ve been trying to get Alan to look for a team and play veteran’s cricket in NSW now for a number of years, he is a good player, and it was great to give him a taste of what veterans cricket is all about.” said Darren.

Alan ended the day in his inaugural O50’s game taking 3-33, while Darren now has family bragging rights with his best performance with the ball taking 5 - 15 from just 6 overs.

“They always go after the easier bowler, who ends up getting all the wickets.” commented Alan, referring to Darren’s bowling figures.

Alan went on to say “Last Sunday I was lucky enough to play with Brighton in my first game of veteran’s cricket. Fantastic day! The comradery between both teams is what I love about playing cricket, lots of jokes and good will. It was also great to play on turf again, something I haven’t done since high school. It was also good to play on a beautiful, well looked after, cricket ground.”

Alan plays cricket for Como Jannali Cricket Club in the Sutherland Shire Cricket Association in Sydney. Typical hard wicket, park cricket with guys who have been playing all their lives and still have the same amount of enjoyment, competitiveness and personal will to perform, as they ever have.

“Cricket is a great team sport that also has each individual desperate for personal achievement.” concluded Alan.

Brighton chased down the 133 in just 20 overs securing Brighton’s first win for the season. A brilliant team effort with Mike Warland compiling 41* from just 26 balls and Mike Szczepanik also making 39 from just 27 balls. Darren secured the win at the end smashing 14* from just 8 balls.

We have heard on the grapevine the Brothers Cheek have not stop celebrating. Mind you they are both still enjoying holidays.

Will we see Alan return to Adelaide in November representing NSW at the Over 50’s Nationals?
